Icons for Nokia S60 applications
The Nokia Carbide designer can be a bit of a pain in the bit for anyone like me that is used to the ease of Visual Studio.I recently spent half a day trying to get icons to show up for my applications, but it just caused it to keep crashing. VALIANT Character Desktop Icons
In the February 1993 issues of VALIANT comics, a set of desktop icons
was selected as the "Gold Pick of the Month".
This winning set of desktop icons features many characters from
the VALIANT universe (just heads), and can be used to replace the
current icons for shortcuts on your desktop.
Choose your format: Windows
Mac
Installing Icons (stored in ICL icon library format) in Windows 95/98/NT/2000
(The cvaliant.zip file must be unzipped first.)
1. Right click the Windows 95/98/NT/2000 shortcut file whose icon you want to change.
2. Select properties from the drop down menu.
3. Select "Shortcut" tab
4. Select "Change Icon" button.
IMPORTANT! - Set the "Change Icon" dialog to show all files by setting
"Files of Type" drop-menu to "All Files"
Select "Browse", choose the ICL file which contains the icons and open it.
Now you can view the contents of the icon library.
Double click the icon you want, select "Apply" from the properties menu.
Installing "Custom Icon" Format Icons on the Macintosh
1. Select the icon you wish to use.
2. Once you have made your selection, choose "Get Info" from the "File" Menu or
press the keystroke Command-i.
3. Then press the "tab" key. A square box should appear selecting the icon on the
top left hand corner of the get info window.
4. Select "Copy" from the "Edit" menu, or press Command-C.
5. Close the get info window, or press Command-W.
6. Select the icon (file, folder, hard disk, or floppy disk) you wish to replace
with the icon you have just copied. You cannot paste icons into a document which
is currently opened with another program.
7. Choose "Get Info" from the "File" Menu or press the keystroke Command-i.
8. Then press the "tab" key. A square box should appear selecting the icon on the
top left hand corner of the get info window.
9. Select "Paste" from the "Edit" menu, or press Command-V.
10. Close the get info window, or press Command-W.

With every new release of Windows, Microsoft updates guidelines for image designers. If you want your project look consistent with the newest Windows, it is important to read and understand the guidelines.
Not getting much into technical details, Microsoft points out that Vista-style images differ from older XP-style icons in several ways. The style of the new icons becomes more realistic than cartoon-line XP icons, but still remains on the symbolic level without becoming too realistic. Microsoft also extends the standard by defining the maximum size of the icons to PNG-compressed 256x256 pixel images, effectively ensuring that applications look well defined on modern hi-definition monitors. Finally, Microsoft recommends that toolbar icons are optimized for smaller sizes, and advises that toolbar icons bear enough visual distinctiveness even in their lowest sizes.
